How To Work Well With Recruitment Firms

Developing good relationships with good recruiters or headhunters is one of the most beneficial ways to gain access to opportunities in the market that may be attractive to you, given their primary role of identifying and submitting strong candidates that respond to the job requirements of their clients. In order to maximize this benefit to you, there are a few basic things you should know and do when working with a recruitment firm.

First of all, if you get a call from a recruiter, they may or may not have a specific position in mind for you. If they do, most likely you’re one of many candidates they’re contacting. In many situations, recruiters aren’t allowed to reveal a client’s identity during their initial contact with you. They should, however, be able to provide you with position details and responsibilities. But until they have a basic indication of your fit and interest in the opportunity, they won’t release to you their client’s name.

However, the more a recruiter knows about you, your background, and your career objectives, the better they can match you to an appropriate position. After all, it’s also in their keen interest to successfully place you in a position you’ll like.

Because of their client relationships, recruitment firms are also an important intermediary between you and a company. Recruitment consultants can provide you with detailed, inside information on job requirements, company culture, and management style, as well as assist you in negotiating compensation. They can also help measure a company’s interest in you.

Avoid giving misleading or inaccurate information to a recruiter. Recruitment firms put their reputation on the line with their clients by representing you to them, so any misrepresentation can be extremely harmful to all parties involved. And while you’re free to send your resume to several search firms at once, as a professional courtesy you should inform the recruiters you’re working with of your job search activities, particularly in situations where two recruitment firms have contacted you for the same opportunity.
